Recent drop side crib recalls have shed light on the serious dangers of this popular crib design. These cribs have one side designed to be raised and lowered. Although these cribs are convenient for parents reaching into a crib to lift a child, convenience is secondary when it comes to your child’s safety. Suffocation or strangulation can occur in drop side cribs when the side designed to raise and lower becomes detached from the head and foot boards, creating a space between that side and the mattress, just big enough for an infant to slip into and become trapped.
A recall of all Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS drop side cribs has been issued because toddlers are at risk of serious injury or death due to strangulation and suffocation. The plastic hardware on Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS cribs can break and allow the drop side to detach. Additionally, the mattress supports can break away from the crib frames. These hardware failures can result in gaps where a small child can become trapped and suffocate or strangle. The recalled cribs were sold at numerous local furniture and retail stores including Buy Buy Baby, Kmart, and Walmart stores nationwide.
The Consumer Protection Safety Commission has urged parents and caregivers to stop using drop-side cribs immediately and find a safer alternative. The Commission has received reports of three infants who suffocated when they became entrapped between the crib mattress and the drop side when the drop side detached. The Commission has also received twenty other reports of incidents involving the drop sides of Generation 2 Worldwide ChildESIGNS cribs.
