Topamax and Cleft Palate

Now, recent FDA reports have confirmed that this popular medication can cause cleft palate, cleft lip, and genital birth defects such as hypospadias in infants whose mothers took the drug during pregnancy. Cleft palate is a condition in which the two bone plates forming the roof of the mouth do not join together. Infants born with this condition generally require expensive corrective surgeries and often remain permanently scarred and disfigured. Hypospadias is a rare birth defect affecting male children in which the opening of the urethra is located on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip. The severity of hypospadias can vary greatly on a case-by-case basis, and some instances require multiple surgeries to create a properly functioning penis. Even after functionality is achieved, many individuals are left with a cosmetically abnormal penis.
