Xarelto, a blood thinner manufactured and marketed by Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, has recently been linked to an alarming number of reports showing that the drug can cause patients to bleed to death or suffer from other serious and potentially fatal side effects such as blood clots and hemorrhaging of the brain and intestines. Patients around the country have filed lawsuits against Bayer and Janssen on the grounds that they failed to adequately warn doctors and patients of the risks associated with the product, and that the product is unreasonably dangerous because there is no associated antidote. The fact that there is no Xarelto antidote means that there is no effective way of stopping hemorrhaging once it begins.
In May of 2013, plaintiffs reached a $650 million settlement with Boehringer Ingelheim, a pharmaceutical company that manufactures a rival blood thinner called Pradaxa. The Pradaxa litigation arose because the drug was associated with the same severe adverse events that are now being linked to Xarelto. The comparison between the products is noteworthy because sometime in 2013 the number of serious adverse event reports concerning Xarelto surpassed the number of adverse event reports for Pradaxa.
