In December 2008, the C.B. Fleet Company recalled its "Fleet Phospho-soda" and "Fleet Phospho-soda Ez-Bowel Cleansing System" products after they were liked to a type of permanent kidney damage that could lead to acute renal failure. The decision to issue the Phospho-soda recall came shortly after the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert for the bowel cleansing products following several reports of acute phosphate neuropathy, a condition which causes permanent and irreversible damage to the kidneys.
Oral Sodium Phosphate Products have long been used as bowel preparation products in patients prior to undergoing colonoscopy. While occasional reports of serious side effects had been reported in the medical literature, the reports increased to the point where in 2006, the Food and Drug Administration issued publications describing the risks associated with these products for bowel cleansing. After the Food and Drug Administration issues such publications, it monitors the products on a continuing basis. During the time that followed, twenty additional cases of patients who used Oral Sodium Phosphate Products and developed kidney problems became known.
In December 2008, the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert stating that Fleet’s Phospho-soda should be available by prescription only due to the risk of kidney injuries. As a result of the safety alert, Fleet issued a recall notice for both its Phospho-soda products and directed patients and physicians to stop using them for bowel cleaning.
If you or a loved one has experienced kidney damage or renal failure after using a Fleet Phospho-soda product, including acute phosphate neuropathy, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. Please
