In August, 2010, the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary DePuy Orthopedics announced a recall of two hip replacement implants, the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System which are believed to have significant design flaws. The recall was prompted by a pattern of total hip failure and other side effects such as sudden severe pain and/or swelling of the hips, audible popping sounds coming from the hip joint, and difficulty walking. Studies show that 12-13% of patients receiving the defective devices were forced to undergo corrective surgery within 5 years of getting the implant.
Additionally, the defective implants contain a metal-on-metal joint that may shed metallic particles, causing damage to the surrounding tissue and an increased concentration of metals in the patient’s blood. The release of metals into the body can cause a condition called Aseptic Lymphocyte Dominated Vasculitis Associated Lesion (ALDVAL) and may fuel the creation of a pseudotumor, a mass of soft tissue created by an adverse reaction to toxic metals.
If you have seen a doctor and been diagnosed with total hip failure after a hip replacement procedure, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. Please
